Gertrude May "Gertie" Anderson

Gertrude May “Gertie” Anderson, 90, of Ellwood City, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, September 23, 2010 in the Mary Evans Extended Care Center at the Ellwood City Hospital.

She was born in East Palestine, Ohio on December 25, 1919 to the late Joseph Walter Cragle and the late Lela M. McDanel Cragle.

She was a graduate of Lincoln High School, class of 1937, and was a longtime active member of Calvin Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder and deacon.

She worked as an accountant at Schwartz Motors, Economy Chevrolet, and Freeman Buick in Ellwood City.

Gertie was a Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star #212; a member of the Ellwood Garden Guild, Mothers Study Club, past president of American Legion Auxiliary #157, member of Ellwood City Hospital Auxiliary, Beaver County Senior Citizens, AARP, and was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Milton C. Anderson, who died November 2 2007. They were married on August 5, 1943. She was also preceded by a sister, Dorothy, in infancy, in 1918.

She is survived by one son and one daughter: Milton C. (and Ailene) Anderson II of Altoona, PA; and Darla Anderson of Ellwood City.

Three grandchildren survive: Michael A. Fontana of Ellwood City; Paula Jo Fontana of McKeesport; and Mattie E. Anderson of Key West, FL. Three great grandchildren also survive.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. on Sunday, September 26, 2010 in the TURNER FUNERAL HOME OF ELLWOOD CITY, Sixth Street at Park Avenue.

Services will be conducted on Monday, September 27, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. in the TURNER FUNERAL HOME with Rev. James N. Latta, pastor of Calvin Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Entombment will follow in Slippery Rock Church Cemetery Mausoleum, Wayne Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ellwood City Area Public Library.

Members of O.E.S. #212 will meet at 6:45 PM Sunday to conduct a memorial service.
