Jean Hofmeister Purdy

Jean Hofmeister Purdy, 97, of Carlisle Street passed away the morning of Oct. 10, 2010, at Jameson Care Center.

She was born May 24, 1913, in Grove City to the late Wilbur and Blanche Martin Hofmeister.

She was married to John E. Purdy. He preceded her in death on May 13, 1975. Mrs. Purdy was a graduate of New Castle High School and received a bachelor of science degree in home economics in 1940 from Penn State University, where she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority.

She was a retired teacher who in 1943 founded and directed the former Jefferson Pre-School, the first pre-school in New Castle. She later organized, directed and taught at the Northminster Nursery School. Mrs. Purdy also helped organize the Meals-on-Wheels program.

She was a member of Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church, where she was also a member of Prime Timers. In addition, she was a member of Wimodausis, Eastern Star Chapter 108, the Council of Home Economics Women, Chapter A of P.E.O. Sisterhood, Girl Scouts Keystone Troop 1, Order of the Rainbow 1, and volunteered with the American Red Cross.

Mrs. Purdy is survived by one son, John E. Purdy of Pittsburgh and New Castle; a former daughter-in-law, Lorraine Stabryla of New Castle; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard L. and Martin H. Hofmeister.

Visitation will held on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Turner-Myers Funeral Home, 208 N. Jefferson St.

A service will be condicted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at the funeral home with the Rev. Chris Weichman officiating.

Burial will follow in Oak Park Cemetery.

Memorial contibutions may be made to Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church.
