Alvin Dale McCandless

Alvin Dale McCandless, 83, of Wooster, OH, formerly of Charlevoix, MI and Ellwood City, passed away on Thursday evening, June 2, 2011 in Summa Akron City Hospital in Akron, OH.

Dale was born in Ellwood City on February 14, 1928 to the late Joseph Alvin McCandless, Jr., and the late Mildred Wehman McCandless. He was a graduate of Lincoln High School in the class of 1946 and served in the United States Marine Corps during WWII. After the war, he studied at Thiel College and earned a degree in physics with a minor in chemistry. He married his wife of nearly 60 years, Lois Brewer McCandless in 1952. He began working for the Medusa Cement Company’s Wampum operations in 1953 until moving to their Charlevoix, MI plant where he was the Quality Control Supervisor until his retirement in 1996, when he moved to Wooster, OH. While in Ellwood, he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. In Wooster, he was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Dale was a member of F.&A.M. #599 Ellwood Lodge, the Ellwood City Lions Club, and the Charlevoix Kiwanis Club. He enjoyed gardening, reading, and traveling; most recently traveling to Scotland and Ireland with his wife for their 50th wedding anniversary.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Lyle McCandless in 1954.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter and a son, Darcy McCandless of Grandville, MI and Curtis (and April) McCandless of Clinton, MI. He is also survived by two grandsons, Leland and Cole McCandless at home, and a brother, Raymond N. (and Jane) McCandless of Montpelier, VT.

Friends will be received from 12 noon until the time of service at 2 P.M. on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 in the TURNER FUNERAL HOME of Ellwood City, Sixth Street at Park Avenue, with Rev. Peggy Suhr-Barkley, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating.

Interment will follow in Slippery Rock Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Wayne Township.

Memorial contributions may be made, in Dale’s name, to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
