John W. Nelle, Jr.

John W. Nelle, Jr., 85, of 734 Harmony-Fisher Avenue, Ellwood City (Franklin Twp.) died unexpectedly on Sunday afternoon, December 28, 2008 at his residence.

He was born in Ellwood City on September 19, 1923 to the late John W. and Edna P. Kriner Nelle, Sr.

He was a pipe fitter at the Babcock and Wilcox Tubular Products Co., Koppel steel plant, until retiring in 1986.

A veteran of the US Marines, he served in the South Pacific Theatre in World War II, in light artillery at Okinawa, Saipan, and the Solomon Islands.

He was a volunteer fireman with the Franklin Twp. Vol. Fire Dept. for many years, almost to its inception. He also belonged to the Ellwood City Saxons, Romanian Club, and Hungarian Home, and the Lawrence County Senior Center.

He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his wife, Vada Jean Elder Nelle, who died May 14, 2006. He also was preceded by two sisters, Christine Donley and Wilma G. Nelle.

He is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law: Nancy (and Thomas) Ward of Waynesboro PA; Lorraine (and Lee) Steffler of Fombell; and Laura Lendyak of Kittanning, PA.

Six grandchildren survive: Jason Ward; Derek, Ryan, and Trevor Blatchford; and Lynn and Claudia Lendyak. Four great grandchildren also survive.

One brother and one sister also survive: William G. Nelle of Columbus, OH; and Betty Schliffka of Fombell. He also leaves his constant companion, his cat “Sammy”.

Friends will be received from 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M. on Tuesday December 30, 2009 in the TURNER FUNERAL HOME, Sixth Street at Park Avenue, Ellwood City.

Services will be conducted at TURNERS at 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday evening, December 30, 2009 with the Rev. Andrew Shaffer, pastor of Camp Run Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Burial will be on Wednesday in Conneration at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Madison Twp., Clarion Co. (Parker) PA.

Memorial donations may be made in his name to the Veterans Honor Guard, c/o Joseph Oldaker, 1520 Eighth Avenue, Beaver Falls PA 15010.

Full military rites will be observed by the Veterans Honor Guard at Turners at 8:00 P.M.
