Mary Irene Kirker

Mary Irene Kirker, 99, of Ellwood City, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, May 4, 2012 at her residence.

She was born in Harrisville, PA area on October 14, 1912 to the late Martin Falen, Sr. and the late Iloe McLaughlin Falen. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School and was the oldest living member of the Wurtemburg United Methodist Church. Prior to marriage, she was employed as a secretary at the Ellwood Works of U.S. Steel Corp and later at Kerry Coal Company in Portersville. She married her late husband of 55 years, Delmar Clair Kirker, on November 24, 1937. He preceded her in death on August 3, 1993.

She was a member of the Portersville Keenagers, the Over 55 Group at Knox Presbyterian Church, and the Wesleyan Fellowship Sunday School Class and United Methodist Women at Wurtemburg United Methodist. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and crafts. She knitted and crocheted, but was best known for her rug-making, having made handmade rugs on her loom for many years. She knew much about wildlife, birds and wildflowers especially.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother and four sisters, Martin Falen, Jr., Mazie MacDonald, Ora Long, Thelma Galbreath, and Cookie Ricciuti.

She is survived by a son and a daughter, Paul L. (and Marjorie) Kirker of Elizabeth City, NC and Judith I. (and Edward) Dorfman of Philadelphia. Three grandchildren also survive, Barbara (and John) Peck and Brenda Hall of Chesapeake, VA, and Sherri Kirker of Concord, VA, as well as six great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, John Falen, of New Brighton.

Friends will be received from 6-8 P.M. on Thursday, May 10, 2012 in the TURNER FUNERAL HOME of Ellwood City, Sixth Street at Park Avenue.

Friends may also call from 10 A.M. until the time of service at 11 A.M. on Friday, May 11, 2012 at TURNER’S with Rev. Jean Smith, her pastor, and Rev. Keith R. Black, chaplain of Vitas Hospice, officiating.

Interment will follow in Wurtemburg Cemetery, Wayne Township.

Memorial contributions may be made, in Irene’s name to the Wurtemburg United Methodist Church, 1244 Portersville Road, Ellwood City, PA 16117, or to Vitas Hospice Charitable Fund.

The family would like to thank the staff of Vitas Hospice for their care given to Irene.
