Alton W. "Bud" Ripper

Alton W. “Bud” Ripper, 90, of Ellwood City, peacefully went home to be with the Lord surrounded by his children on Thursday evening, January 10, 2013, in the Ellwood City Hospital.

He was born in Evans City on September 21, 1922 to the late William Ripper and the late Leah Nichlass Ripper. He was a graduate of Evans City High School in the class of 1940. He married his late wife of 43 years, Dorothy L. Holliday Ripper, in 1948. She preceded him in death on May 27, 1991. Bud was a longtime devoted member of Calvin Presbyterian Church, where he sang bass in the choir, was an ordained Elder, Sunday School teacher, and chairman of many committees. He served in his career as a purchasing agent at Mathews Conveyer in Ellwood and at Calgon/Merck in Pittsburgh.

Bud was a follower of God who lived his faith out in restaurants around our area and in the quietness of his home. Since Bud didn’t cook, he would journey out to a different establishment every day. When he arrived there, he brought a huge bag of candy for all the employees to share. They called him the “Candy Man.” His bags of candy were eagerly anticipated and opened the doors for him to share his faith. He knew most, if not all, of the employees by name and knew their stories, too. He listened to their joys, hurts, and everything in between. Then, every morning, he would take those stories to God and pray. He had a prayer list of over 3,000 names.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Marziano.

Bud is survived by two sons and a daughter: David A. (and Judy Beth) Ripper of Adrian, MI; Robert W. (and Jane) Ripper of Aurora, CO; and Patricia J. Fielder of South Plainfield, NJ. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. on Sunday, January 13, 2013 in the TURNER FUNERAL HOME of Ellwood City, Sixth Street at Park Avenue.

Services will be conducted at 11 A.M. on Monday, January 14, 2013 at Calvin Presbyterian Church, 615 Crescent Avenue, Ellwood City with Rev. James Latta officiating.

Interment will be in Slippery Rock Presbyterian Cemetery in Wayne Township.

Memorial contributions may be made, in Bud’s name, to the Calvin Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.
