Karin L. Goerl

Karin L. Goerl, 49, of Ellwood City, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday afternoon, March 23, 2014 in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.

She was born in Houston, TX on July 24, 1964 to the late Thomas Morosko and the late Suzanne Wilson McKim. She graduated from Lincoln High School in the class of 1982. She also graduated from the Jameson School of Nursing and, more recently, the Animal Behavioral College. She was a member of Calvin Presbyterian Church in Ellwood City, where she was an active member on the Board of Deacons. She also attended Bible Study at the Independent Methodist Church in New Castle. She was an RN at various hospitals, including UPMC Presbyterian and Tampa General. She was also a dog trainer, both independently and for Jack Mansell’s School for Dogs. Kari was a volunteer puppy raiser for Canine Companions for Independence; she also organized and headed the Reading Buddies program at the Ellwood City and Zelienople libraries, and was a member of the Butler Dog Training Association. While battling Cystic Fibrosis her entire life, in October 2007, she received a bilateral lung transplant. Kari was very much a woman of faith and enjoyed reading and cooking for others.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Wilbert C. “Wib” McKim, her stepsister, April Grahl, and her stepbrother, Scott McKim.

Kari is survived by her daughter, Lyndsey Basham, at home, her husband, Ron Goerl, her stepdaughter Emily Hack, and her stepson Austin Goerl. She is also survived by two stepbrothers, Todd F. (and Karen) McKim and Blake A. McKim, a stepsister, Courtney M. (and James) Ingram, and many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 in the TURNER FUNERAL HOME of Ellwood City, Sixth Street at Park Avenue.

Services will be conducted at 11 A.M. on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Calvin Presbyterian Church, 615 Crescent Avenue, Ellwood City, PA 16117, with Rev. Sean Brubaker, her pastor, and Rev. Frederick Gilbert, pastor of the Independent Methodist Church in New Castle, officiating.

Interment will be in Slippery Rock Presbyterian Cemetery, Wayne Township.

Memorial contribution may be made, in Kari’s name, to the Ellwood City Library or to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
