Margaret E. Challis

Margaret E. Challis, 96, of Mile Hill Road, formerly of R. J. Schill Manor, Ellwood City, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on July 14, 2014 in the Ellwood City Hospital.

She was born in New Castle on November 20, 1917 to the late George Lawrence and the late Ruth Esther McConnell Lawrence. Margaret graduated from Shenango High School in the class of 1935 and went on to graduate from New Castle Business College in 1937. She attended the First United Methodist Church in Ellwood City and worked at the Ellwood City Knitting Mill for many years. She enjoyed reading, knitting, watching soap operas, and spending time with her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, William Alvi Challis, on February 18, 1990. She was also preceded by her son, Michael L. Challis, on June 4, 1975, as well as her brother, James Lawrence, and her sisters, Shirley Maxwell and Mary Sankey.

Margaret is survived by her daughter and her son, Jane (and OIiver) Gongaware and William E. (and Mary) Challis, all of Ellwood City, her daughter-in-law, Carol Challis, of Ellwood City, as well as her sister, Grace McCready, of New Castle, eight grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Per her wishes, no public visitation is planned. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 A.M. on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Lillyville Church of God, 408 Hickernell Road, Ellwood City, PA 16117 with Rev. Dennis Arndt, pastor of Lillyville Church of God, and Rev. Phil Conklin, pastor of First Church of God, officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to the TURNER FUNERAL HOME of Ellwood City, Sixth Street at Park Avenue.

Interment will be in Lillyville Church of God Cemetery, Franklin Township.

Memorial contributions may be made, in Margaret’s name, to the donor’s favorite charity.
