Nellie I. Hockenberry

Nellie I. Hockenberry, 88, of Shenango Township, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, September 2, 2014 at Edison Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation in New Castle.

She was born in Camp Run, Lawrence County on November 12, 1925 to the late Francis “Clair” Cummins and the late Gladys Bristol Cummins. She attended Camp Run and Shadyside schools and was a member of the former Camp Run Free Methodist Church. Nellie married her husband of 70 years, William E. Hockenberry, Sr., in Camp Run on December 13, 1943. He survives. She enjoyed baking, reading, and working puzzles. She played the piano and sang for weddings and funerals and also enjoyed crocheting and would make blankets for friends and neighbors following a house fire.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, William Hockenberry, Jr., her grandson, Steve Davis, and her great great grandson, Nathan Copper. The last of her family, she was also preceded by her two brothers, Thomas Cummins and William Cummins in infancy.

Nellie is survived, in addition to her husband, William, Sr., by two sons and three daughters: Sylvia McIntosh of Shenango Township, Goldie Hockenberry of New Castle, David (and Karen) Hockenberry of Princeton, James (and Ruth) Hockenberry of Port Orange, FL, and Ethel Mayberry of Mt. Jackson. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Bette Hockenberry of Harlansburg. Eleven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild also survive.

Friends will be received from 6-8 P.M. on Thursday, September 4, 2014 in the TURNER FUNERAL HOME of Ellwood City, Sixth Street at Park Avenue.

Services will be conducted at 11 A.M on Friday, September 5, 2014 at TURNER’S.

Interment will be in Wurtemburg Cemetery, Wayne Township.

Memorial contributions may be made, in Nellie’s name, to the Alzheimer’s Association.
