Mae N. Gandy

Mae Naomi Gandy, 89, of Thirteenth Street, Ellwood City, departed this life peacefully on Sunday afternoon, January 25, 2015 at her home.

Mae was born September 28, 1925 in Youngstown, Ohio to the late Gurley and Sarah Carter Evans. Mae was raised in Ellwood City and attended Lincoln High school, where she went by the name “Geraldine.” After leaving high school, she moved to Pittsburgh, where she met her husband, Howard “Willie” Gandy, Sr. She worked at West Penn Hospital in the laundry department and then moved back to Ellwood City with her three oldest children to continue to grow and raise her family. Mae worked faithfully for three generations of the Kegel family and at the Ledger newspaper office until her retirement in 2012. Mae was active in Love Hope Baptist Church, serving as a Deaconess, trustee, member of the mission board, and other ministries.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Howard “Willie” Gandy, Sr., whom she married on February 16, 1945, and who preceded her in death on July 24, 1991. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Johanna Gandy, on May 14, 2013. The last of her family, she was also preceded by her siblings: Rebecca Jones, Ella Mae Evans, and James Evans, Sr.

Mae leaves behind to mourn her loss, her children, Barbara Gandy Johnson of Ellwood City, who was her dedicated caregiver, Willie Gandy, Jr. of New Castle, Vernon Gandy of Norfolk, VA, and Kathy Hough of Houston, TX, eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren, and a host of loving nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. on Thursday, January 29, 2015 in the TURNER FUNERAL HOME of Ellwood City, Sixth Street at Park Avenue.

Services will be conducted at 11 A.M. on Friday, January 30, 2015 at Love Hope Baptist Church, 400 Wayne Avenue, Ellwood City, PA 16117, with Rev. Canard S. Grigsby, her pastor, officiating.

Interment will be in Locust Grove Cemetery, North Sewickley Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family in care of the funeral home.
