Helen A. Christie Biggins

Helen Aliene Christie Biggins, 88, formerly of Squaw Run Road, Ellwood City, died Thursday evening January 28th, at Evergreen Nursing Center in Harmony, PA.

She was born in Ellwood City on April 11, 1921, daughter of the late Homer and Rachel Kennedy Christie.

Helen graduated from Lincoln High School in 1939. She continued her education at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh and graduated with an R.N. degree in 1942. She married her beloved husband of 56 years, Lester L. “Sam” Biggins, on March 13, 1943. He preceded her in death on March 2, 1999. Helen worked as an R.N. in the Mary Evans Maternity Ward and then as a Head Nurse and Nursery Supervisor at the Ellwood City Hospital.

Helen was member of Wiley Hill Baptist Church, where she served as a Board of Trustees member, a Sunday School Teacher, a Youth Group Leader, a Vacation Bible School Teacher and belonged to the Ladies Missionary Society. Helen served as a Den Mother, and Girl Scout Leader. Along with her husband, Sam, she sponsored the Wayne Buckaroos 4-H Horse and Pony Club at the family farm on Squaw Run Road for over 27 years.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother Homer Christie, a sister and brother-in-law Amanda and Paul Kuben; a sister and brother-in-law Mary Evelyn and Robert Infield; a brother and sister-in-law Gaylord and Dorothy Gardner Christie and a sister and brother-in-law Alice and Jack Clark.

She is survived by a son and daughter, Thomas A. (and Kristine) Biggins of Sedro Woolley, WA, and Glenna J. (and Thomas J.) Edwards of Lawndale, NC.

She is also survived by her three grandchildren: James T. (and Amy) Edwards of Pittsburgh, PA, Christie R. (and Anthony T.) Pica, of Williamsburg, VA and Sam Michael (and Camille) Biggins, of Bellevue, WA; as well as three great-grandsons: Thomas Michael Biggins, William Gabriel Pica, and Solomon James Edwards.

Sister- in- laws: Les Christie of Deer Island, OR, Thelma “Sis” Drennen of Texas, Dorothy L. Biggins, of New Castle, and Joyce M. (and Chet) Chidester of Danville, KY, many nieces, nephews, cousins also survive.

Friends will be received on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 from 12:00 Noon until the time of service at 1:00 P.M. in the TURNER FUNERAL HOME of Ellwood City, Sixth Street at Park Avenue, with Rev. Bruce Gardner, Pastor of Berean Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, Wayne Township.
