Kenneth Clarence Turner (1924-1992)

Kenneth Clarence Turner (1924-1992)

Founder of Kenneth C. Turner Funeral Home(1957) and Turner Funeral Home(1976)

Kenneth C. Turner, Sr. was born and raised in Ellwood City, PA. He served his country proudly in the United States Marine Corps as Sergeant (Sgt.), serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He served in the Battle of Peleliu, in the Philippines, and Okinawa, in Japan.

He attended the Cleveland College of Embalming, graduating in 1947. Upon returning to Ellwood, he went to work for Bill Patton at the Patton Memorial Home, and he purchased the funeral home, renaming it Turner Funeral Home in 1957. As time passed, his funeral home grew and by the mid 1960’s Ken had to do a complete renovation by combining the original funeral home and he connected it to the home next door to the funeral home and put his chapel between them, with Turner’s having the first full funeral home chapel in the area and the first funeral home with live organ music that was played and was piped through the new state of the art Soundsystem. With the remodel, 3 additional viewing/parlor rooms, two additional bathrooms and a 2nd handicapped access entrance, also including two separate paved parking lots, being the first funeral home to offer such an amenity.

In 1976, after a legal battle with the State Funeral Board of Pennsylvania, he was permitted to incorporate his funeral home, as Turner Funeral Home, Inc, by this he was issued the first Restricted Business License, and the number issued was “1”, making Turner Funeral Home, Inc the first incorporated funeral home in Pennsylvania. Kenneth was a member of The Selected Morticians Association and served on the board as well as Secretary/Treasurer and Vice President.

K.C. was remembered by most Ellwoodians as a kind, generous, and humble man. He began taking care of families, while working for Bill Patton, in the early 1950's. Ken became known for being very fair and empathetic and truly the epitome of a true funeral professional. He is still greatly missed today and his legacy lives on at his funeral home, almost 32 years after his death.

Kenneth Turner was very well respected by all in Ellwood City and owned and operated Turner Funeral Home in Ellwood City from 1957 until his death and he also owned Turner-Myers Funeral Home in New Castle, PA, until his death in 1992, at age 67.

He was married to the late Regina Wimer Turner, and they had two sons: both Licensed Funeral Directors, Kenneth C Turner and Jack R. Turner (1955-2025) who took over the business as owners, upon his death.
